arthRogam Q & A

What is an arthRogam?

arthRogams are imaging technology for your joints. If you’ve broken a bone, torn a ligament, or worn down cartilage, your physician may use an arthRogam to pinpoint the source of your problems.

Additionally, if you have difficulty moving your joint, unexplained pain in your joint, or something just feels “off,” an arthRogam generates a high-quality visualization of your joint’s interior. Your radiologist, internist, rheumatologist, orthopedist, or any other specialist can use this information to identify the cause of your discomfort or monitor the progress of your condition.

Typical body parts that require an arthRogam are:

  • Wrist
  • Elbow
  • Shoulder
  • Ankle
  • Knee
  • Hip

Diagnosis and treatment of conditions like arthritis or trauma to these body parts are significantly enhanced by arthRogams. In a single session, you and your health care providers can have a much better understanding of your joint’s health.

What can I expect from my arthRogam?

The procedure varies by technician and condition, but typically, you first undergo an X-ray, which serves as the baseline comparison for arthRogam results. Then, a technician will clean and numb your skin before removing any fluid from your joint with a needle.

Next, a contrast dye is injected directly into the joint space. To ensure the dye spreads around, you may be asked to move your joint a little. Then, the technician performs additional imaging procedures, like X-ray, CT, or MRI to visualize clearly the soft-tissue structure of your joint’s:

  • Tendons
  • Ligaments
  • Muscles
  • Cartilage
  • Joint capsule

The contrast dye highlights the internal structures for a clearer, more defined image. In total, the procedure usually lasts 1-2 hours. Your radiologist may consult with you about the images and relay the information to your doctor.

Immediately after your arthRogam, you may have some soreness in your joint. Precise MRI recommends that you avoid intense exercise or activity, like heavy lifting, for a few days until any swelling and soreness completely subsides.

How can I prepare for my arthRogam?

While there is no special preparation required for an arthRogam, the Precise MRI team recommends comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the joint being imaged. It is highly unlikely any dietary restrictions will be necessary. Additionally, if there is another procedure, like an MRI, it is important to prepare appropriately for that exam.
